Children's bed frame 80x160 — liftable, metal

The 80x160 size is a classic of the children's room — big enough for a child of nursery and early school age, and at the same time easy on space. Our metal liftable frame 80x160 turns the space under the mattress into roomy storage, while the steel frame takes loads that no wooden construction will survive — including when the bed is used for jumping.

The mechanism that opens from the foot end is the solution for beds standing free or with their longer side against the wall.

Why steel and not wood

What to prepare before assembly

The frame is fitted inside a bed box, which is not included. The minimum internal dimension is 80 x 161 cm, with a box height of at least 20 cm. The mounting height of the mechanism is chosen to match the thickness of the mattress. Fit the gas struts with the thicker part facing upwards. Technical drawings of the mechanism can be found in the product image gallery.

Corner supports — an absolute requirement. Each of the four corners of the box must have a support for the closed frame to rest on. Without one, the entire load is carried by the bolted corners of the frame and by the lifting mechanisms, which leads to them wearing out or being damaged.

Gas springs. The set includes matched 400N gas struts. The force is matched to the weight of a child's mattress — a stronger gas strut is not a better one, because it makes the frame spring upwards.

Frequently asked questions

What age of child is the 80x160 size suitable for?

A bed 160 cm long usually serves from the age of 3 to 10. After that, it is worth moving on to the 90x200 or 100x200 size, which we make in the same construction.

Is the bed box included in the set?

No. The frame is fitted inside a box built by you or bought separately. The minimum internal dimension is 80 x 161 cm with a height from 20 cm.

Will the frame stand up to jumping on the bed?

Children jump on beds and no instruction manual will change that — which is why it is worth knowing what really decides whether the bed can take it.

The frame itself is built for it. A steel 40x30 mm profile with a 1.5 mm wall handles dynamic loads incomparably better than wood, which dries out over time and starts to work loose at the joints. But there are two things the person building the bed has to get right, and the durability of the whole depends on them.

1. Supports in every corner of the box

This matters most. The closed frame must rest on the four corners of the box — on battens, blocks or shelves screwed to the sides. If the frame hangs on the lifting mechanisms alone, every jump transfers the full impact to the bolted corners of the frame and to the mechanisms themselves. The result is loosened or worn corners and, in extreme cases, a bent mechanism. With supports in place, the force goes straight into the box and the construction does not feel it at all.

2. The right mattress

With a thin mattress, the whole force of the jump strikes one or two slats at a single point — and those can simply snap. Not because they are weak, but because nothing spread the pressure. A good mattress of the right thickness cushions the impact and distributes it across many slats at once, that is across the whole surface of the frame. It is the same principle as walking on snow in boots versus on skis.

In short: the frame will take it. Provide four corner supports in the box and a decent mattress, and the bed will last through the whole of childhood.
